WEDNESDAY ROUNDUP: DINING TABLES // SEARCHING FOR OUR NEXT TABLE
When we moved into our current home, we had a HUGE dining room and no table even close to being big enough to fill the space! I lucked out and found one on Facebook Marketplace for $100 (😱) and it was 10.5’ long! I fell in love with having a big table to gather around with our family and friends, where everyone could have a seat! We have 10 chairs up for grabs everyday, all day! When we decided to sell our house, I just couldn’t bear the thought of taking this table with us. It was made for this space! And I love the idea of another family gathering around it with family and friends, making memories! (And also, Justin said he wasn’t ever moving it again once he got it inside! That thing is SOLID, and the legs don’t even come off!) So since we decided to leave this table here with the home it was made for, I am officially on the hunt for our next table to gather around! I know we will have to live without one for a while due to shipping delays, backorders, etc, but finding the right table to fit our new space will be worth the wait!
I don’t have an exact plan yet for how I will set up this next house. Sometimes I like to break up the traditional floor plans and relocate dining rooms in living spaces or offices in dining spaces. So once we close and I get the spaces measured off, I am going to draw up my master plan for the entire house. Even though we will be doing one area or project at a time, it is always good to have an “end all” plan for the overall design of the house! There are a few things to consider when buying a table:
Make sure the room size and table size are proportionate // Our current home for example: the dining space is roughly 15’ long and shares high traffic walking spaces. A small 7’ table would seem so out of place, but a 12’ table would be too tight for walking clearance around the room, so 10’ was perfect!
Pay attention to the leg base on the table and think about how you want your seating situated // Do you want a round table where everyone can face each other in conversation? Or if you want a rectangle with two head chairs on each end you wouldn’t want a table with a waterfall edge or solid legs panels on the ends because a person couldn’t sit on the ends with comfortable leg space.
Longevity! // Your table is one of the most used pieces of furniture. So thinking through your stage of life, how that will transition and the overall style of the piece can be helpful! Can it transition with you more easily from one home to the next or over the years as your style grows? Or is it a quality enough piece to withstand tiny humans climbing, coloring and banging utensils on it? (speaking from experience on that one!) Investing in a nice dining table with a classic transitional design has the potential to last you for years!
I hope this is helpful for those of you who are also in the hunt for a dining table, or are just suddenly ready for a refresh! You can shop the links directly below.
